Fleas and Ticks

How to Remove a Tick from Your Pet

If you’re a dog owner, it’s important to know how to remove a tick from your pet safely and easily. Ticks carry diseases that can harm your pet, so removing them as quickly and efficiently as possible is crucial. To help keep them safe from future tick bites, give Lawn Plus Pest Control Services a call.

Inspect Your Dog Thoroughly for a Tick

The first step is to inspect your dog thoroughly for a tick. Next, run your hands down each leg, inside their armpits, under their bellies, and around their chests. If they’ve been rolling around, thoroughly comb through their back fur, parting the fur to expose the skin underneath.

Gather Supplies

The first step of removal is to gather the supplies you’ll need. You’ll need a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, antiseptic wipes, and cotton balls or swabs. It’s also a good idea to have a container on hand that can be sealed shut in case the tick is still alive after removal.

Use Gentle Extraction

Using the tweezers, carefully grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight upward with steady pressure. Avoid crushing the tick’s body, as this could cause its fluids to be released into your pet’s bloodstream.

Clean the Area

Once the tick is removed, dispose of it in the container and clean the wound area with an antiseptic wipe or cotton ball. Inspect your pet again to make sure you didn’t miss any other ticks.
