5 Types of Ants in Ohio

If you’re like most people, the sight of an ant sends shivers down your spine. Ants are some of the most common insects in the world and can be found almost everywhere. In Ohio, there are five common types of ants that you should know about: carpenter ants, pavement ants, odorous house ants, pharaoh ants, and thief ants. Here is everything Lawn Plus Pest Control Services wants you to know about these ants in Ohio.

1. Carpenter Ants

As their name suggests, carpenter ants are known for tunneling through wood, which can cause severe damage to homes and other structures. Carpenter ants are typically black or red, ranging in size from 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. These ants are most active at night when they search for food. Carpenter ants are attracted to sweet substances like honeydew, nectar, and fruit juices. However, they will also eat insects, spiders, and even small vertebrates.

2. Pavement Ants

Pavement ants get their name from their habit of nesting in cracks in sidewalks and driveways. These ants are small, dark brown, with a light-colored stripe running down their backs. Pavement ants are relatively harmless but can be a nuisance if they invade your home. If you find ants in your house, it’s essential to identify the type to find the best way to get rid of them.

3. Odorous House Ants

As their name suggests, odorous house ants give off a foul odor when crushed. They’re small, ranging in size from one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch, and are black or brown. They are attracted to sweet foods, so you might find them in your kitchen pantry or near your garbage can. These ants typically nest outdoors in soil or wood, but they will occasionally nest indoors if the conditions are right.

4. Pharaoh Ants

Pharaoh ants are tiny, only about 1/16 of an inch long, and light brown or yellow in color. They are called Pharaoh ants because they were first discovered in Egypt. Pharaoh ants are not native to Ohio but have been introduced to the state through human activity. They are a significant problem because they live in large colonies that can number in the thousands. They are also difficult to control because they will quickly split their colony into multiple smaller colonies if they are disturbed.

5. Thief Ants

Thief ants are also small — usually less than 2 mm long. They are brown or black in color and have round abdomens. Thief ants get their name from their habit of stealing food from other ants’ nests. They typically live in wooded areas and are often found near trees and shrubs. While they are not considered a pest ant species, they can become a nuisance if they enter homes searching for food.
