Mosquitos are a common backyard insect, invading between early spring and early fall. Not only are they a major nuisance, but they can also transmit diseases between animals and humans. Identifying the type of mosquitos around your home and getting rid of them takes the expertise of the team from Lawn Plus Pest Control Services. However, here are four types of mosquitos we deal with daily, during the summer months.

4 Types of Mosquitos in Ohio

1. Eastern Treehole Mosquito

The Eastern treehole mosquito lives throughout the entire state of Ohio, and loves to hang around wooded areas such as campgrounds and parks. Their usual hosts of choice are smaller mammals, but they’ll take a bite out of humans as well. They tend to lay their eggs in trash dumps or the natural tree holes of silver maples, oaks, and beech trees, and they are most aggressive during the day. These tiny biters spread the La Crosse virus, which can cause fever, headaches, vomiting, and lethargy.

2. Asian Tiger Mosquito

The Asian tiger mosquito was brought to the United States in the 1980s, and has quickly spread across the entire country. This bug resides in the southern counties of Ohio, but the Ohio Department of Health estimates that it’s likely in every county. This bloodthirsty biter will feed on anything, and is most active during the day in shady conditions. They tend to lay their eggs in abandoned tires, plastic containers, and clogged gutters. They can transmit the chikungunya, dengue, and Zika viruses.

3. Northern House Mosquito

This species of mosquito is most commonly known to spread the West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis. They are the most common pest for homeowners who are trying to enjoy quiet, summer evenings outdoors on the patio. They prefer to feed on birds, but have developed a taste for humans as well. Northern house mosquitos will lay their eggs in weeds, shrubs, tall grasses, or anywhere with stagnant water.

4. Malaria Mosquito

The malaria mosquito is found throughout Ohio, and humans are its favorite host. They are most active during the dawn and dusk hours, making it very uncomfortable to be outdoors at these times. They love to lay their eggs in permanent bodies of water, such as ponds and lakes, or near slow-moving streams. As the name would suggest, this mosquito has the potential to carry the parasites that cause malaria.
